SUP is a highly accessible, fun and social way to enjoy the sea or inland waters. Whatever your age, skill or fitness level this is a great way to get yourself out on the water enjoying this amazing sport, its the best fix for your mind, body and soul. 

Within just a couple of hours, you will have mastered the basics to enjoy and share this activity with your family and friends. 

GET UP, STAND UP!

LOCATION :

North Devon boasts some of the best coastal and inland waterways. For lessons, rentals and social sup's the River Torridge is mainly used, this is a tidal river that runs through Bideford, meets the River Taw at Appledore and flows into the Bristol Channel. There are various locations along the river that can be used to take advantage of its flat water and sheltered spots. Using the incoming or outgoing tides there is a lot to explore and see. The 'AB' instructors have a vast knowledge and experience of the waterways, and the location and time shall be arranged by us, as this depends on tides, and also the wind direction and strength.  Due to bad weather cancellation or postponement may occur.                                           

EQUIPMENT USED AND WHAT TO BRING :

The RRD Air Evo 10'4" X 34" X 4" 3/4 and the RRD Smart 10'4" X 34" X 6"  are used for the SUP School.

These boards are the ideal all round inflatable paddle boards, with the highest technology and performance. Feel free to contact Amy to discuss any requirements. 

Bouancy aids will also be provided. We don't supply wetsuits, as we are unable to accommodate for these with being a mobile service. So you will need to bring your own and a towel. However during the warmer weather shorts & a rash vest or t-shirt is adequate. A form of water shoe to wear is personal choice.  

If you don't have your own wetsuit don't panic. Contact North Devon Surf School in Westward Ho! (1 Pebbleridge Road, Westward Ho! )  Our chosen local provider. They offer a wetsuit hire service and will be very happy to assist you. Not only that they are the company to go to if you are interested in surf lessons, offering an exceptional and professional service.

LESSONS: 

The majority of the lessons operate from the lay by called "Little America" located alongside the River Torridge on the A386. There is adequate parking in the lay by and there are steps to access the river.

Amy will meet you on your arrival and all equipment will be laid out ready.  Adventure Boardsports specialises in catering for small groups, and also 1:1 tuition. With your agreement photos are taken during your session to capture those memorable moments for you.

See below for the structure of the lessons.

1.5 HOUR BEGINNER SUP LESSON - £50 p/p (maximum of six )

After the meet and greet and filling out a booking form, a brief on land shall be given first. This includes introducing you to the board and equipment, how and where to kneel on the board, basic paddling skills, and self recovery techniques, and accessing & exiting the river safely. Before you get on the water everything is explained and demonstrated. Once on the water and you have mastered the basics from your knees, you will then progress to standing up. From kneeling to standing everything is explained and demonstrated on the water. 

The lesson naturally involves a paddle up the river, exploring and checking out the local wildlife, and if you have that adventurous streak in you a few games/challenges can be thrown in for good measure, like the ever so popular raft walking and SUP water polo !  Don't be afraid to get wet ! Its all part of SUP 🤙

You shall be able to confidently paddle and manoeuvre the board by the end of the session. And most importantly be having fun and you will want to do more !

The lesson can naturally go over 1.5hr slightly, this is purely due to the fun factor. So you are getting value for money for your lesson 😁 

SUP IMPROVER LESSON. 1.5hr  - £50 p/p (maximum of six)

Once you have mastered the basic skills and you are keen to learn more, then this is the course for you !! By the end you will leave feeling confident to stand up, paddle, turn and enjoy flat water paddling. After a quick re cap and brief on land we shall soon take to the water.

On the water your paddling skills will be broken down and you will be given tips to improve your paddling techniques. You will be taught more advanced flat water paddle strokes like the SUP J-stroke, and why it's used ? And the cross bow turn. Then comes the getting wet part, with the ever so popular step back pivot turn and the nose 360 !  

The lesson also involves learning about the tides, weather, wind direction and strength, and most importantly keeping yourself safe with safety and equipment advice. This is all the knowledge that you will need when it comes to taking to the river yourself or with a SUP buddy. 

Tuition and guidance will be given throughout to help you improve your SUP skills, and don't be shy asking any questions to broaden your own knowledge. 

1:1 TUITION £120 Duration 2hr 

Focusing on your specific needs - If you have done some paddle boarding before and want to refine your paddling techniques, or build on your water confidence.  Come along and have that 100% attention from your instructor with your very own tailored 1:1 lesson. 

AGE RESTRICTION :

The lessons, guided tours, rentals and mega sup sessions are suitable from the age of 12+.

12-16 must be accompanied by an adult actively taking part.  

16+ years can take their own board unaccompanied, if the disclaimer is signed for by a responsible adult, guardian/parent.

RENTALS

Rentals are operated from the same location of lessons, from the lay by alongside the River Torridge. The rental service is classed as a supervised rental, so there is an instructor at hand if you need any assistance. You will have a quick safety brief, and be given a safety card before you set off. You can explore the river at your own pace, but during your paddle time an "AB" instructor will be on the water conducting a lesson. So they will be at hand if required. 

All rentals include a buoyancy aid (which is required to be worn for your own safety), board/waist leash, adjustable paddle, and the RRD Air Evo or Smart stand up paddleboard.

A returnable deposit must be left with Adventure Boardsports for the duration of your rental. This will be in the form a bank card, keys or drivers licence.

For the rental service, previous SUP experience is required.

ADVENTURE GUIDED TOURS -DURATION 2HRS

Basic requirements: Water confident, can self rescue, already have the basic paddling techniques and can paddle with confidence.

Bored of paddling the same stretch of water ? Do you have that sense of adventure ? and want to expand new waterways but don't know how to or don't have the knowledge or experience.  Don't delay and book on an AB Adventure Guided Tour to discuss your requirements.

Not only is there the River Torridge, but also Westward Ho! has an amazing coast line and rocky out crops to explore. Plus all the wildlife from the inquisitive seals to birdlife, and if your really lucky dolphins and porpoises too !      

Also available is the ever so popular, and the SUP boarders favourite - Downtiders and Uptiders. Using the outgoing tide we paddle from Little America in Bideford to Appledore Quay, passing Bideford Quay we head for the New Bridge.             

Paddling along the rocky cliff line we see lots of birdlife including Egrits and Herons before approaching the bustling Quay of Appledore. Remember some cash as a Hockings Ice Cream is well deserved. You are then transported back to your car by the "AB" van.

This can also be done using the incoming tide and doing the paddle in reverse.

SUP tours are planned weather and wind dependent. This is all in the safety of an "AB" instructor. Don't forget to bring a drink and snacks !! During the summer a sun hat, sunglasses and suncream is a must. 

RRD MEGA AIR SUP :

The inflatable paddle board that provides lots of fun and laughter. Staying dry is not an option.

This giant board is really stable and easy to use and can take up to 6 - 8 paddlers. It involves teamwork, communication and a commitment to adventure and fun. Suitable for all groups from families and friends, to businesses wanting team building sessions to be a little bit different !  It is also ideal for Hen and Stag groups.  Have that memorable experience with the RRD Mega Sup.
